Courtney is the proud owner and founder of Inspirational Hair Consultant By Trade. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where I reside and work.
It all began as a young girl. Everyone could find me playing with Barbie hair and creating different styles. I always dreamed of opening and running my own beauty salon, but I never knew if I wanted to do more than just hair. I thought it would happen one day, but I had absolutely no clue when. One thing I enjoyed doing in my free time was going to a salon, watching customers getting their hair done, and seeing how their faces lit up when they were done. Seeing how happy the customers were and how they felt beautiful about themselves was empowering. Watching hairstylists style their clients’ hair gave me inspiration, and it taught me a lot. My parents were very supportive of my dreams. Every time I felt doing hair was not for me, they reminded me why I started and the difference I can make.
In the 90s, my high school offered a cosmetology course, which I decided to pursue. There were several reasons why I pursued the beauty industry. For instance, I am passionate about doing hair and believe the right look helps people feel confident. I enjoy working with people and embrace diversity. I like building strong relationships with my clients and being part of a supportive and vibrant community. It’s a creative and dynamic career that allows me to use my skills and talents to make people look and feel their best. I love having the freedom to work when I want, choose my own clients and hours, and decide how much I can charge. I’m my own boss. Being a hairdresser provides opportunities for personal and professional growth. I have the ability to learn new skills and techniques and stay up to date with the latest trends.
In 2018, I decided to continue my journey by studying at Modern Barber College. There I learned different cutting techniques, such as creativity and artistic ability. I had to learn about having an eye for color and different types of hair texture. Being able to express my ideas and inspirations through work is amazing. Clients love when beauticians not only have an eye for color but also pay attention to detail, because even the smallest mistakes can have massive consequences. Working closely with people, I’m consistently building strong relationships and connections with clients by being friendly, empathetic, and understanding, and by communicating effectively with people of different backgrounds and personalities. Being in the beauty world, I have experienced many physically demanding tasks, such as standing, bending, and moving for long periods of time. Having good hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills is important, as I use scissors, combs, and other tools to style and cut hair. I was grateful for the opportunity to polish my skills.
I am here today because of what has happened at different beauty parlors. Traditional beauty salons that I have worked at have all been selling me a dream. Beauty salons want their stylist to promote themselves to potential clients, which we do. The client then becomes the business’s client and not the stylist’s client. Why should it work that way? Hair dressers are being restricted on many levels, such as being forced to cut a certain way or greeting clients a specific way. Some beauty corporations fail to tell the public how they misrepresent themselves as a barbershop instead a beauty salon. Clients are not aware that stylists are not allowed to refuse clients because they do not know how to perform a certain type of haircut that the client wants. As a stylist, we have a time limit for each haircut, which means that if the hairstylist goes too quickly or too slowly, they are written up for it by the beauty company.
I’m an independent mobile stylist and love it. It allows me to offer clients a variety of services and products at my own prices. I have the flexibility to work where and when I want and can even offer certain services on certain days and at certain times. I make my own rules. Creating my own work environment is a plus because I can have the client come to me or I can go to the client’s place, creating a work environment that makes me and my client happy. I’m able to build a tight-knit client base that I’m passionate about! I can build even tighter bonds with my clients. Clients are not only opening their doors to me, but also, they are allowing me to decide how to style their hair and sharing their lives with me. The client feels safe and gives me access to their home life. I have become a huge part of my clients’ lives and form unbreakable bonds! I also like being able to help those who may have mobility issues that make it difficult to visit a traditional salon. I’m the kind of person who thrives on human interaction because of the hands-on experience with customers.
This is where my journey has brought me! I am a licensed Cosmetologist and Barber by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
